Brookings County Deputies Respond to Juvenile Threats at Deubrook and Elkton Schools; No Ongoing Danger

Northeast Radio SD News – Brookings County, SD - The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to two separate juvenile threat incidents Wednesday at Deubrook School in White and Elkton School in Elkton. In both cases, deputies say the involved students were quickly identified, taken into custody, and that no active or ongoing threat ever existed to students or staff.

Deubrook School Incident — 12:37 p.m.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, a School Resource Officer received a report of a juvenile student receiving threatening messages from another student. During the investigation, deputies learned additional threats had been made toward other students.

The student responsible was immediately identified and taken into custody. Deputies emphasized that at no point was there concern of an active threat.

Deubrook School issued a statement to families, calling the situation an “isolated incident” and noting that safety protocols were followed immediately. School leaders reassured parents that students and staff are safe and that no further threat exists. Due to student privacy laws, no additional details will be released.

Elkton School Incident — 2:44 p.m.

Later in the afternoon, deputies received a report from Elkton School after a student told staff about a threatening claim made by another juvenile. School administration contacted law enforcement right away.

Deputies again quickly identified the student involved and took them into custody. The Sheriff’s Office stated there was no danger to students, staff, or the community.

Elkton School thanked deputies for their response and said all security procedures were followed. Administrators reiterated that student safety remains their highest priority.

Patrol Sergeant Manny Langstraat said deputies have “no ongoing concern of any threats remaining from this incident” in either school and praised the quick reporting by students and staff.

Both investigations remain active, and no further information will be released due to juvenile confidentiality.
