Northeast Radio SD News – South Dakota - Governor Larry Rhoden has formally recognized September 18, 2026, as POW/MIA Recognition Day in South Dakota, honoring former prisoners of war and remembering service members who remain missing in action.

The South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs says the state continues to account for 349 service members who have never returned home. That includes six from the Vietnam War, 33 from the Korean War, and 308 from World War II.

South Dakotans are encouraged to observe the day by attending local ceremonies and displaying the POW/MIA flag. A statewide list of events is available through the Department of Veterans Affairs at vetaffairs.sd.gov.

The department emphasized the importance of remembrance, noting the day is dedicated to honoring

“America’s former prisoners of war and remembering those who remain missing in action.”

POW/MIA Recognition Day is observed nationwide each September as a reminder of the families still awaiting answers and the ongoing commitment to account for every missing American service member.
