University of Jamestown Wind Ensemble Performs for Watertown High School Students

Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - The University of Jamestown Wind Ensemble recently traveled to Watertown to perform for Watertown High School band and choir students, giving local musicians a look at collegiate music opportunities.
Directed by Dr. Ashley Hawk, director of band and assistant professor of music education at the University of Jamestown, the ensemble performed several short selections to showcase the group's musical versatility. The visit gave Watertown High School students the chance to hear a collegiate ensemble firsthand and learn about participating in music programs after graduation.

Balancing College Music, Academics, and Athletics
During the visit, Hawk shared information with students about the academic and extracurricular involvement of Wind Ensemble members.
According to Hawk, roughly 30 percent of the ensemble's performers are music majors or minors, while about 70 percent pursue other fields of study. Additionally, about 30 percent of the musicians compete as collegiate student-athletes, and most participate in other campus activities—showing how high school musicians can keep playing in college while pursuing a wide range of degrees and activities.
Watertown High School Alum Featured in Performance
The concert also highlighted a direct connection to the Watertown community with the return of Watertown High School graduate Ty Sullivan, who performs as a member of the University of Jamestown Wind Ensemble. Sullivan's participation gave current Watertown students a local example of how graduates can stay involved in music beyond high school.
The ensemble concluded the concert by performing the University of Jamestown school song for the Watertown students.
