Northeast Radio SD News – Groton, SD - The magic of outdoor ice took center stage this past weekend as the Watertown Figure Skating Club (WFSC) returned to the ice for the annual Carnival of Silver Skates. In a long-standing community tradition, the WFSC was once again invited to participate as guest performers in a show that traded the quiet chill of a standard rink for the high-energy roar of an outdoor arena.
A Performance Like No Other
The atmosphere in Groton was electric, offering a sensory experience that departed from the traditional competitive environment. Under the glow of bright spotlights and the open night sky, skaters performed to a unique soundtrack: the rhythmic blasting of car horns and the echoing cheers of a community gathered in their vehicles and grandstands.
“Opportunities like this highlight the joy and thrill of figure skating beyond the rink walls," the club shared in a statement. “It was a truly unforgettable experience—one that participants will remember long after the final bow.”
National Team Trios Take the Ice
The highlight of the event featured two of Watertown’s National Team trios, who represented the club with precision and grace. Despite the challenges of outdoor ice conditions, these athletes delivered confident performances that captivated the audience.
The WFSC congratulates the following featured performers:
· Abigail Reeves, Audrey Mack, and Elin Gossen
· Madison Johnson, Dorothy Peterson, and Brooklyn Bloom
Celebrating Community Tradition
The Watertown Figure Skating Club’s participation in the Carnival of Silver Skates serves as a reminder of the strong bond between local skating organizations and the surrounding communities. By stepping out of the traditional rink and into the spotlight of a community festival, these skaters showcased not only their technical skill but also their ability to connect with an audience in any setting.
The club remains proud to be a part of such a memorable local tradition and looks forward to many more nights under the Groton lights.
