Northeast Radio SD News - Watertown, SD - In a live interview on Northeast Radio SD, from Watertown, Nathan Sanderson, Executive Director of the South Dakota Retailers Association (SDRA), emphasized the critical role of proximity and persistent advocacy in protecting the state’s 4,000+ member businesses.

Speaking with Steve Jurrens of Northeast Radio SD, Sanderson highlighted the association’s “strategic location” directly across from the State Capitol in Pierre. This physical presence, he noted, is essential for keeping the interests of South Dakota retailers “top-of-mind” for legislators throughout the year.

“Being right across the street means we are in constant contact,” Sanderson said. “We are there every single day of the legislative session, ensuring that the voice of the South Dakota business owner is heard on issues ranging from tax policy to labor regulations.”

Sanderson’s visit to Watertown coincided with the rollout of the SDRA’s latest initiative, the NextGen Business Builders program. This 13-month professional development cohort is designed specifically for new entrepreneurs—those who have owned their businesses for five years or less. The program aims to provide a robust support system, including networking opportunities and specialized training in areas like artificial intelligence and customer service.

Despite national economic headwinds like inflation and supply chain disruptions, Sanderson remains optimistic about the local retail landscape. He credited the state’s positive business climate to a philosophy of limited government interference and the inherent resilience of South Dakota’s “Main Street” entrepreneurs.

The SDRA continues to serve as the “business help desk” for the state, representing industries across retail, hospitality, and grocery sectors.
