Brookings Woman Killed in I-29 Crash Near Sisseton; Highway Closed for Hours

Northeast Radio SD News – Sisseton, SD - A Brookings woman died Monday afternoon in a two‑vehicle crash on Interstate 29, three miles east of Sisseton.


According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, the crash happened at 3:34 p.m. near mile marker 232.


Preliminary information indicates a 52‑year‑old man from Tower City, North Dakota, was driving a 2024 GMC Sierra northbound on I‑29 while pulling a 48‑foot header trailer. At the same time, a 34‑year‑old Brookings woman driving a 2022 Honda Ridgeline was also traveling northbound. As the Sierra moved into the passing lane, the Honda collided with the trailer. The driver of the Honda sustained fatal injuries.


A 13‑year‑old passenger in the Honda, also from Brookings, was wearing a seat belt and was not injured. The driver of the GMC was not hurt.


Names of those involved have not yet been released pending notification of family members.


I‑29 was closed for approximately four and a half hours following the crash.


The South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate. All information released so far is preliminary.
