Castlewood, SD’s Kones Korner Sold to Moorhouse Family After 62 Years Under Carter Ownership
Northeast Radio SD News – Castlewood, SD - After 62 years of operation, the Carter family is officially selling Kones Korner to Dallas and Paige Moorhouse’s family, with the new ownership taking effect on October 1st.
Located at 18299 US Hwy 81 in Castlewood, South Dakota, Kones Korner originally opened as a rural gas station and convenience store in the 1920s. The business will celebrate its 100th anniversary next year.
The Carter family’s unique legacy with firearms began in 1966 when Curt Carter purchased several guns at an auction, displayed them in an old candy case, and quickly sold them. Under the day-to-day management of Curt’s son, Vic Carter, the operation has since grown to carry an inventory of approximately 2,500 firearms.
Today, the store serves local, nationwide, and international customers, while continuing to offer 24-hour gas pumps, traveler snacks, and rentals for tables, chairs, and trailers. The business also advertises Prairie Breeze Lodge, an eight-bedroom custom hunting property located near Hays, Kansas.
To facilitate the transfer of inventory and bookkeeping, the store will temporarily close the week of September 28th and will reopen under the Moorhouse family on October 5th. Customers who need to pick up firearms won at banquets are instructed to do so by 5:30 p.m. this Saturday. The Carter family is also urging customers to use any outstanding gift certificates by the end of the week.
The community is invited to celebrate Vic Carter’s career at a retirement party at the store on Saturday, September 26th, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. In their public announcement, the Carter family expressed deep appreciation for the public’s support and business over the last six decades.
