Northeast Radio SD News - Castlewood, SD - A Castlewood student is making history in South Dakota conservation efforts by spearheading the state’s very first high school chapter of Ducks Unlimited.
Sawyer Craig, a student at Castlewood High School, joined Northeast Radio SD today to announce the formation of the “Castlewood Varsity Ducks Unlimited” chapter. Craig says the idea was sparked about a year ago after a conversation with his sister’s lacrosse coach, who serves as a Regional Director for Ducks Unlimited.
“He watched a couple of my games and asked my dad if I would be interested in it because he wanted to start one,” Craig explained. “Of course, I said yes, and we got rolling from there.”
The new chapter currently has six members hailing from both Castlewood and Watertown. Their mission is to raise funds that go directly into wetlands conservation, which Craig notes supports the local habitats that hunters and outdoor enthusiasts enjoy.
To kick off their fundraising efforts, the group is hosting the Castlewood Varsity DU Dinner on Friday, February 6th, at Tables Steakhouse in Castlewood. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with dinner served at 6:30 p.m.
“All the profit just goes back into the wetlands... towards our chapter if we want to plan something,” Craig said. The event will feature raffles, games, and prizes, including a “great gun banner” sponsorship opportunity. Tickets are $30 for singles, $50 for couples, and just $15 for students.
Craig, an avid hunter who demonstrated his impressive duck and goose calling skills live on the air, says he hopes to see other high school chapters spring up across the state following their lead.
