Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - The Codington County Auditor’s Office has issued a notice to voters regarding a delay in the availability of absentee ballots for the upcoming June 2nd Primary Election. While the absentee voting period is legally scheduled to begin 46 days prior to the election, ballots will not be available on the first day of that window.
Statutory Timelines Cause Scheduling Conflict
The delay is attributed to the timing of candidate filings. Under South Dakota law (SDCL 12-6-4), the deadline for candidate petitions was March 31st. Because the final list of candidates determines the ballot layout, the Auditor’s Office cannot finalize, program, or print ballots until all candidate eligibility is confirmed.
The office is currently working through the certification, layout, programming, and proofing stages to ensure the democratic process remains accurate and secure.
Next Steps for Voters
The Auditor’s Office is working to resolve the delay as quickly as possible. Once the ballots are ready:
· Mailed Ballots: Absentee ballots will be sent immediately to voters who have already submitted an application.
· In-Person Voting: In-person absentee voting will commence at the Auditor’s Office located at 14-1st Ave. SE, Watertown, SD.
· Personal Notifications: Individuals who visit the office while ballots are still unavailable may request a personal notification to be alerted as soon as they arrive.
Guidance for the Primary Election
Voters are encouraged to submit their absentee ballot applications early and verify their registration information. The final deadline to request an absentee ballot is 5:00 p.m. on the day before the election.
Updates regarding ballot availability will be shared through the official county website and local media channels. https://www.codington.org/auditor/
