Codington County Completes Repaving on County Roads 7 and 10 East of Watertown

Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - The Codington County Highway Department has repaved portions of County Road 7 and 10 and is finalizing upgrades to its maintenance and truck storage facility, according to a monthly report presented at the Commissioner’s meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026.
Randy Falvey presented the highway department report to the Codington County Board of Commissioners at its regular meeting at the Codington County Courthouse in Watertown.
Maintenance Shop and Truck Storage Upgrades
Falvey told commissioners that contractors have finished work on the highway department building, except for one electrical component needed for a ventilation exhaust fan in the truck storage area. He said that component is expected to be finished this weekend.
Mechanical and electrical walkthroughs are complete, and all equipment has been moved back into the maintenance shop and the truck storage area.
"And it's amazing how much more room there is in there now that everything is organized and much brighter," Falvey said. "It was actually warmer in the truck storage area this morning than it was in our maintenance shop."
The upgraded truck storage area includes new floor drains and water access, allowing crews to rinse salt off equipment once snow and ice melt. Falvey added that crews plan to paint inside the facility this winter as weather permits to match the old and new sections of the building.
County Road 7 and 10 Repaving and Striping
In road construction updates, Falvey reported that the repaving of County Road 7 and 10—the route east of Watertown that ties over from Interstate 29 to U.S. Highway 212—is complete.
Highway crews were on site Tuesday to finish shoulder work. Once striping is complete, the road should be fully open by the end of the week.
"It's a vast improvement," Falvey said. "It's hard to believe that there was only an inch and a half of asphalt in some of those areas on the north-south portion of it. So that'll be much better for truck traffic now."
After striping County Road 7 and 10, the department will do a final sweep of the county roads chip-sealed this year so crews can stripe those routes by the end of this week or early next week.
Fall Mowing and Winter Preparation
Crews are also finishing grass cutting along county roadways in preparation for the upcoming winter season, which Falvey said should be completed within the next two weeks. Once mowing wraps up, the department will resume hauling gravel until the end of the season.
