Northeast Radio SD News – Lake Poinsett, SD - A lake house on the west end of Lake Poinsett is a total loss following a structure fire early Tuesday morning. Emergency responders from multiple agencies battled the blaze for several hours in cold conditions.

The Watertown Regional Dispatch Center received a 911 call around 8:30 a.m. on December 16, 2025, after a neighbor spotted smoke billowing from a residence in the 400 Block of West Lake Drive.

The Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office was the first to arrive on the scene, confirming an active fire. They were quickly joined by the Lake Norden Fire Department, which launched an immediate attack on the flames. Due to the fire’s intensity, the Hayti Fire Department was called in to provide mutual aid.

Despite the total loss of the property, officials confirmed a fortunate outcome regarding human safety:

·        No Injuries: Lake Norden Ambulance remained on standby, but no injuries were reported.

·        Occupancy: The structure was unoccupied at the time the fire broke out.

·        Traffic Control: The South Dakota Highway Patrol assisted at the scene to manage traffic flow along West Lake Drive as crews operated.

Ongoing Investigation

Firefighters continued suppression and overhaul efforts throughout the morning to ensure all hot spots were extinguished. While the house has been declared a complete loss, the cause of the fire remains unknown and is currently under investigation.

The Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office and local fire officials have not yet released an estimated value of the damage. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the increased fire risks during the South Dakota winter months, where heating equipment and electrical malfunctions often contribute to residential fires.
