Former SDSU Equestrian Coach Indicted on Grand Theft Charges

Northeast Radio SD News - Watertown, SD - A former head equestrian coach at South Dakota State University (SDSU) is facing a felony grand theft charge following allegations that she misused university and taxpayer resources for her personal benefit.
Attorney General Marty Jackley announced Wednesday that Kamerra Brown, 38, of Brookings, was indicted by a Brookings County Grand Jury on January 8, 2026.
Allegations of Misuse
According to the Attorney General’s Office, the indictment follows an investigation into Brown’s use of university resources over approximately one year. She is alleged to have used SDSU funds to pay veterinary bills for her own horses and to board her personal animals at university facilities.
While the exact amount of the alleged theft remains to be determined, authorities estimate the total value at between $5,000 and $100,000.
Legal Consequences and Investigation
The charge of grand theft is a felony in South Dakota. If convicted, Brown faces a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in state prison.
The case is being handled by the South Dakota Attorney General’s Public Integrity Unit, which is responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes involving the misuse of public funds and resources.
Career Background
Brown returned to SDSU as the head equestrian coach for the 2024-25 season. She had previously served as an assistant coach for the Jackrabbits from 2010 to 2014, then held coaching and teaching positions at other institutions, including William Woods University and Delaware State University.
As of the date of the indictment, Brown is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
