Hamlin County Deputies Respond to Four Labor Day Weekend Crashes Near Castlewood and Lake Norden

Northeast Radio SD News – Hamlin County, SD - The Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office responded to four separate crashes over the Labor Day weekend, resulting in one arrest and charges or citations for three additional drivers.
Interstate 29 – Rural Castlewood
At 4:16 a.m. Friday, September 4, deputies were dispatched to Interstate 29, about one mile north of the Castlewood Exit, after a caller reported a vehicle in the ditch. A 19‑year‑old Watertown man was located at the scene. After conducting Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, deputies arrested the driver. They charged him with Driving Under the Influence, Open Alcohol Container in a Motor Vehicle, and Possession of an Altered or Fictitious License.
SD Highway 28 – Rural Lake Norden
At 9:16 p.m. Friday, deputies investigated a damaged vehicle in Lake Norden that appeared to have been involved in a crash. The investigation determined the incident occurred earlier on SD Highway 28 when a 27‑year‑old Lake Norden woman swerved to avoid a deer, causing damage including a blown tire. She was cited for Leaving the Scene of a Crash and Driving While License Suspended. The Lake Norden Police Department assisted.
453rd Avenue – Rural Lake Norden
At 5:14 p.m. Saturday, September 5, deputies responded to a semi rollover on 453rd Avenue near 192nd Street. The crash had occurred earlier when the driver attempted to move over for an oncoming semi, causing the truck and trailer to tip into the ditch. Lake Norden Ambulance evaluated the driver, who had apparent injuries but was not transported. A 21‑year‑old Milbank man was charged with Failure to Report a Crash Immediately.
County Road 184 – Rural Castlewood
At 7:34 a.m. Sunday, September 6, deputies investigated a crash on 184th Street near 465th Avenue after a caller reported a vehicle had entered the ditch, struck a row of trees, and left the scene. Deputies collected vehicle parts and followed tire tracks to a vehicle located in Deuel County. Through coordination with the Deuel County Sheriff’s Office, Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, and Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office, deputies located the driver in Estelline. The investigation determined the 20‑year‑old Estelline man had fallen asleep while driving, continued through the intersection at 465th Avenue, and later lost control, striking trees. He was cited for Failure to Report a Crash Immediately.
