Northeast Radio SD News - Henry, SD - A Henry man has been ordered to serve time in the South Dakota State Penitentiary following a violent domestic incident last fall that involved a high-powered bow and the medical neglect of a special-needs child.

Jeremy David Vought, 42, appeared before the Honorable Dawn Elshere in Third Circuit Court on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, for sentencing. The hearing followed a plea agreement reached in January in which Vought pleaded guilty to one count of Aggravated Assault (Domestic) - Deadly Weapon, a Class 3 Felony.

The Sentence

Judge Elshere sentenced Vought to a total of six years in the state penitentiary. However, the court suspended four years of that term on the condition that Vought abide by the rules of the Department of Corrections and reimburse Codington County for court-appointed attorney fees.

Vought was credited with 115 days already served in the Codington County Detention Center. In addition to the prison time, he was ordered to pay a $25 domestic violence fee and other statutory court costs.

Details of the Incident

The charges stem from a 911 call on October 19, 2025, from a residence on 446th Avenue in Henry. According to court documents, a female victim, later identified as Wendy Plunk, messaged dispatchers stating she was “scared” and hiding in a bathroom.

Responding officers from the Codington County Sheriff’s Office discovered an arrow lodged in the upper portion of the bedroom door where Plunk had been seeking shelter. Vought admitted to shooting the arrow down the hallway, later telling deputies he was “joking around”. At the time of his arrest, Vought provided a breath sample of .186 PBT, more than double the legal driving limit.

Dismissed Charges

Vought was originally indicted on additional charges, including Child Abuse (a Class 4 Felony) and Reckless Discharge of a Firearm.

The child abuse charge was linked to the discovery of Vought’s son, identified by initials only, who is 100% dependent on caregivers. Upon entering the home, Sergeant Jerrod Olson found the child face down in a wheelchair and non-responsive. Investigations revealed the child had been neglected for approximately a day and a half, missing essential anti-seizure medication while Vought was intoxicated.

As part of the final plea agreement, the prosecution moved to dismiss the child abuse and weapons charges in exchange for the guilty plea on the aggravated assault count.

Vought was officially remanded to the custody of the state penitentiary immediately following the hearing.
