The South Dakota Highway Patrol will conduct sobriety checkpoints in 17 counties throughout the month of June, according to a release from the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
Checkpoints are scheduled in the following counties: Beadle, Brookings, Brown, Codington, Davison, Day, Fall River, Hughes, Jones, Kingsbury, Lake, Lincoln, Lyman, Meade, Minnehaha, Pennington, and Yankton.
The Highway Patrol says the monthly checkpoints are designed to discourage impaired driving and enhance roadway safety. The effort is funded by the South Dakota Office of Highway Safety and carried out with assistance from local law enforcement agencies.
Officials are reminding motorists to make responsible choices and avoid driving after consuming alcohol, whether or not a checkpoint is planned in their area. Drivers who plan to drink are encouraged to arrange for a designated sober driver or use public or commercial transportation.
Both the Office of Highway Safety and the Highway Patrol operate under the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
