Northeast Radio SD News - Watertown, SD - The South Dakota State Parks Division recently recognized the extraordinary efforts of its staff and volunteers at its annual awards meeting in Chamberlain, with locals near Lake Poinsett and Pelican Lake receiving top honors for their dedication.

Two individuals with ties to the region were celebrated for their outstanding service, bringing recognition to the Lake Poinsett and Pelican Lake recreation areas.

Genee Dorn was named the 2025 Seasonal Employee of the Year for her impactful work at Lake Poinsett Recreation Area near Arlington. Soon after starting her position, Dorn quickly demonstrated a strong understanding of essential park operations, prioritizing clean facilities, excellent customer satisfaction, and effective teamwork. Her excerpt noted that she brought a strong skill set to every task, enjoyed engaging with visitors, and was a positive presence among her coworkers.

Robert Rutten earned the distinguished 2025 Volunteer of the Year award for his service at Pelican Lake Recreation Area near Watertown. Rutten logged an impressive 450 hours as a maintenance volunteer this season. His most notable contribution was his initiative to single-handedly clear hundreds of trees after two severe summer storms severely impacted the park. His humble and proactive “go get ’em” attitude was described as invaluable to the park’s successful operation.

Jeff VanMeeteren, director of the Division of Parks and Recreation, expressed his appreciation for all the honorees. “It is an honor to recognize these individuals,” VanMeeteren said. “Our staff work hard, and visitors to South Dakota state parks and recreation areas appreciate their efforts.”

The awards highlighted dedication across the division:
