Murdo Man Sentenced to Federal Prison for Rosebud Reservation Assault Near White River

Northeast Radio SD News – Murdo, SD - A Murdo man has been sentenced to federal prison for an assault that seriously injured another man on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation. U.S. Attorney Ron Parsons announced that 20‑year‑old Dane Menard was sentenced Monday in federal court in Pierre.

U.S. District Judge Eric C. Schulte ordered Menard to serve two years and six months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Menard must also pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

Menard pleaded guilty on June 15, 2026, after being indicted by a federal grand jury in August 2025. The conviction stems from a March 15, 2025 incident near White River, in Mellette County, within the Rosebud Sioux Reservation. According to the release, Menard struck an adult male with his vehicle in the driveway of a residence, leaving the victim hospitalized with a broken arm and broken ankle.

Federal prosecutors handled the case under the Major Crimes Act, which requires certain violent offenses occurring in Indian Country to be prosecuted in federal court rather than state court. The case was investigated by Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, and prosecuted by Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson. Menard was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following sentencing.
