Northeast Radio SD News - Brookings, SD - Multiple law enforcement and emergency response agencies were dispatched to a medical emergency near the north end of the South Dakota State University (SDSU) campus this morning.

At approximately 11:29 a.m. on November 15, 2025, responders located a vehicle stopped near the north end of Jackrabbit Avenue. Authorities found the driver, a 71-year-old male, suffering from a serious, self-inflicted injury.

Officers provided immediate medical aid until Brookings Ambulance personnel arrived. The individual was transported to Brookings Hospital to be stabilized before being airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital for further treatment of a life-threatening injury.

In accordance with established protocols, an SDSU campus alert was initially issued during the response. The SDSU Administration later cleared the alert after authorities determined the incident occurred at a rural address in Brookings County and posed no ongoing threat to campus safety.

Agencies responding to the scene included the SDSU Police Department, Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, Brookings Police Department, and Brookings Ambulance.

The incident is under investigation. Anyone with information about the case can contact the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office at 605-696-8300 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously by visiting www.brookingsareacrimestoppers.com or by calling 605-692-STOP (7867).
