Redfield Man Killed in Jeep-Train Crash East of Redfield, South Dakota

Northeast Radio SD News – Redfield, SD - Authorities have released the name of the man killed in a single‑vehicle versus train crash east of Redfield on July 29.
According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, Paul Ray Whitley, 59, of Redfield, died when his 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited collided with a southbound BNSF train at the intersection of 174th Street and 386th Avenue, approximately a quarter‑mile east of the Redfield city limits. The crash occurred at 7:22 p.m. Whitley was not wearing a seat belt.
Preliminary information indicates Whitley was traveling west on 174th Street when his vehicle entered the crossing and struck the train as it passed through the intersection. He sustained fatal injuries.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash, and officials note that all information released at this stage remains preliminary.
