Northeast Radio SD News - Watertown, SD - State Senator Glen Vilhauer has officially announced his candidacy for reelection to the District 5 seat in the South Dakota State Senate.

Vilhauer, who was first elected in November 2024, currently serves on the Senate and Joint Appropriations Committee. A retired Certified Public Accountant, Vilhauer has lived in Watertown with his wife, Darla, for 45 years.

“It’s been an honor to represent the citizens of this district, and I look forward to continuing that commitment,” Vilhauer said. “With the experience I am gaining in Pierre, I can continue to be a strong, effective advocate for District 5.”

Reflecting on the 2025 legislative session, Vilhauer highlighted several key priorities from his first year in office. His efforts focused on securing funding for public education and the state’s technical colleges, specifically Lake Area Technical College in Watertown. He also emphasized his support for the South Dakota National Guard and advocated for maintaining local control by preventing state oversight from encroaching on city, county, and school district decision-making.

Vilhauer’s platform also includes a commitment to enhancing economic opportunities within rural communities across the state.

Vilhauer brings a long history of public service to his role. His background includes 10 years in the South Dakota Army National Guard, nine years on the Prairie Lakes Healthcare System board of directors, and eight years as a member of the Watertown City Council. Additionally, he served four years on the South Dakota Retirement System board of trustees.

District 5 encompasses the City of Watertown and its four surrounding townships.

As the election cycle approaches, early voting is scheduled to begin on April 17. The primary election will be held on June 2.
