Northeast Radio SD News – Brookings County, SD – A baler malfunction sparked a small grass fire Monday afternoon near the intersection of 214th Street and 469th Avenue, according to a media release from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies and the Brookings Fire Department were dispatched around 3:45 p.m. after receiving a report of a baler on fire in a hay field. Responding units found a small grass fire burning around the equipment.

Fire crews quickly extinguished the flames, preventing damage to the baler and avoiding injuries.

The release states: “The baler was not damaged in the fire, and no injuries were reported by the operator of the tractor.”

A failed bearing in the baler is believed to have caused sparks that ignited the surrounding grass. The only reported loss was approximately $100 worth of hay.

The incident remains under the review of the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
