Northeast Radio SD News - Watertown, SD - In an effort to encourage safe driving habits and enhance public safety during the holiday season, the South Dakota Highway Patrol has announced that sobriety checkpoints will be conducted across 15 counties throughout December.

These monthly checkpoints are a key component of a statewide strategy designed to discourage impaired driving and ensure safer roadways for everyone proactively.

The checkpoints will be carried out in the following counties: Bennett, Brule, Butte, Codington, Custer, Day, Hughes, Jerauld, Lincoln, Meade, Minnehaha, Moody, Pennington, Walworth, and Yankton.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol will conduct the operations with the assistance of local law enforcement partners. The program is funded through the South Dakota Office of Highway Safety, with both agencies operating under the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.

Officials emphasize the positive message behind the checkpoints: the importance of drivers making responsible decisions. They strongly urge anyone who has been drinking to designate a sober driver or utilize alternative transportation options, regardless of whether a checkpoint is scheduled in their area.

This unified approach aims to make the holiday period safe and enjoyable for all South Dakotans.
