Northeast Radio SD News - Watertown, SD - The South Dakota Highway Patrol has announced that sobriety checkpoints will be conducted in 16 counties across the state during October.
The planned checkpoints will take place in the following counties: Brown, Brule, Clay, Codington, Davison, Day, Edmunds, Jones, Lake, Lawrence, Meade, Minnehaha, Pennington, Sanborn, Stanley, and Yankton.
These monthly checkpoints are primarily designed to encourage citizens to avoid driving while under the influence of alcohol. The Highway Patrol conducts operations in partnership with local law enforcement agencies and is funded by the South Dakota Office of Highway Safety. Both the Office of Highway Safety and the Highway Patrol are agencies of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
Officials have issued a reminder to all motorists to ensure they have sober transportation at all times, regardless of whether a checkpoint is scheduled in their area. Individuals who have been drinking are urged to designate a sober driver or utilize alternative forms of commercial or public transportation.
