Northeast Radio SD News – South Dakota - The South Dakota Retailers Association (SDRA) has introduced a new initiative aimed at supporting new entrepreneurs across the state. The program, called NextGen Business Builders, is a 13-month professional development and networking program for individuals who have owned their business for five years or less.
The program is designed to provide accessible resources and connections that new business owners often seek. Participants will engage in both in-person and virtual sessions focused on expanding knowledge in core areas, including marketing, human resources, and customer service.
Nathan Sanderson, Executive Director of the SDRA, commented on the impetus behind the launch. “We’ve found that entrepreneurs, especially those who are new to business ownership, are looking for two things—accessible professional development and connection with other early-stage owners,” Sanderson stated. “Our goal is to support strong business leaders who can confidently lead their enterprise for years to come.”
The development of NextGen Business Builders was significantly influenced by input from SDRA board members, including Samantha Tupper, owner of Wink’s Fine Jewelry in Brookings, and Erin Krueger, owner of Freed’s Fine Furnishings in Rapid City.
Tupper expressed enthusiasm for the new offering, noting, “I wish this would have been available to me when I took over Wink’s Fine Jewelry seven years ago. I really do believe new business owners who participate will realize a lot of value from it.”
Krueger echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the program's focus on key entrepreneurial needs. “When I became a business owner, I needed knowledge, connections, and confidence,” Krueger said. “This program is designed to hit all three of those marks.”
The NextGen Business Builders program is scheduled to begin on January 11-12, 2026, coinciding with the South Dakota Retailers Association’s annual business conference in Pierre. Interested individuals can find a preliminary schedule, details on professional development topics, and the application on the SDRA website.
The application period for the program closes on November 15.
