Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - South Forty Specialties has announced the acquisition of Roy’s Sport Shop, bringing one of Watertown’s most recognizable and longstanding businesses under the South Forty brand while expanding opportunities for team apparel, custom products, and local service.
Roy’s Sport Shop, founded in 1970 and operated by the Bierscheid family for the past 40 years, has served generations of athletes, schools, and families across northeast South Dakota. South Forty CEO Jim Engels said the acquisition honors that legacy while strengthening the company’s growing sports and lifestyle division.
“Roy’s has been a staple in Watertown sports for as long as most of us can remember,” Engels said. “We’re honored to carry that legacy forward and excited to combine Roy’s experience with everything we’re building at South Forty.”
Owners Gene and Kathy Bierscheid said keeping Roy’s connected to Watertown was a priority as they looked toward the future of the business.
“Joining another Watertown company keeps Roy’s local roots intact while bringing a skilled team, an expanded sales network, and top‑tier in‑house apparel decoration to area coaches and athletes,” they said. “We are confident South Forty has the resources to carry the Roy’s name into the future.”
The acquisition blends Roy’s deep community relationships and sports heritage with South Forty’s in‑house production capabilities, advanced technology, and expanding e‑commerce reach. South Forty says customers will see increased options for team gear, custom apparel, and specialty products while maintaining the personalized service Roy’s is known for.
Engels said the company’s focus is on protecting what made Roy’s successful while investing in its next chapter.
“We know Roy’s means a lot to this community,” he said. “Our focus is on taking care of longtime customers and investing in its future.”
South Forty will manage the transition with respect for Roy’s established reputation, with additional details on branding, services, ordering, and locations to be announced as integration continues.
