Statewide Students Set to Compete in South Dakota State Spelling Bee

Northeast Radio SD News - Mitchell, SD - Twenty-five elementary and middle school students from across South Dakota have qualified to compete in the South Dakota State Spelling Bee on Feb. 7. The competition will take place at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, with the winner advancing to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington this May.


For the second consecutive year, South Dakota News Watch and Dakota Wesleyan University are sponsoring the event. The competition aims to highlight academic excellence and provide students with experience in public speaking and confidence-building.

“Hosting the South Dakota State Spelling Bee reflects Dakota Wesleyan University’s commitment to academic excellence and lifelong learning,” said Larson, director of marketing and communications at DWU. “It’s an honor to welcome students from across the state and celebrate their hard work, curiosity, and love of learning.”


The program provides classroom materials to enrolled schools year-round, reaching millions of students globally. The state bee serves as the final hurdle for South Dakota students hoping to represent the state on the national stage.


Schools with qualifying winners for the state competition include:


·        Brandon: Brandon Valley Intermediate School; Robert Bennis Elementary School

·        Brookings: George S. Mickelson Middle School

·        Clear Lake: Deuel School

·        Estelline: Estelline Junior High; Sharon F. Delzer Elementary School

·        Garretson: Garretson School

·        Madison: Madison Elementary School

·        Milbank: Milbank Middle School

·        Mitchell: Gertie Belle Rogers Elementary School

·        North Sioux City: Dakota Valley Upper Elementary Middle School

·        Parkston: Parkston Elementary School

·        Piedmont: Piedmont Valley Elementary School

·        Platte-Geddes: Platte-Geddes Elementary School

·        Rapid City: Saint Elizabeth Seton Central School; Saint Thomas More Middle School

·        Scotland: Scotland Middle Senior High School

·        Sioux Falls: Challenge Center Elementary School; Good Shepherd Lutheran School

·        Spearfish: Black Hills Christian Academy

·        Sturgis: Sturgis Elementary School

·        Vermillion: Vermillion Middle School; Vermillion Elementary School

·        Waverly: Waverly South Shore School

·        Yankton: Sacred Heart Middle School


The competition will be held at the Sherman Center on the DWU campus. Registration for competitors begins at 9 a.m. Central Time, with the bee officially starting at 10 a.m. The event is open to the public at no cost.
