Sturgis Rally Patrol Report: One Fatal Crash, Seven Injury Crashes Reported Near Sturgis and Rapid City

Northeast Radio SD News – Sturgis, SD - The South Dakota Highway Patrol has released its daily Sturgis Motorcycle Rally activity report, covering the 24‑hour period from 6 a.m. Saturday, August 8 to 6 a.m. Sunday, August 9. The latest update includes one fatal crash, seven injury crashes, and more than 700 warnings issued across the Sturgis and Rapid City districts.
Rally Enforcement Activity
Troopers reported the following combined totals for the two districts:
· DUI Arrests: 21 (same as last year to date)
· Misdemeanor Drug Arrests: 32
· Felony Drug Arrests: 14
· Custodial Arrests: 37
· Total Citations: 260
· Total Warnings: 713
· Cash Seized: $0
· Vehicles Seized: 0

Fatal Crash
4:41 p.m. Saturday — U.S. Highway 85, mile marker 35 A 2003 Harley‑Davidson Electra Glide operated by a 72‑year‑old man was traveling north on U.S. 85 when the rider braked while approaching a motorcycle turning ahead of him. He lost control and was separated from the motorcycle. The rider was transported to Monument Health in Spearfish, where he later died from his injuries.
Injury Crashes
9:19 a.m. — U.S. Highway 16A, mile marker 33: A 2017 Harley‑Davidson collided with the rear of a 2026 Harley‑Davidson after the lead motorcycle slowed for traffic. All three riders, including a passenger, were wearing helmets and sustained non‑life‑threatening injuries.
11:20 a.m. — N Rochford Road and U.S. 14A: A 67‑year‑old man lost control while traveling in a group and was separated from his motorcycle. He was not wearing a helmet and was airlifted to Rapid City Monument Health with serious injuries.
11:46 a.m. — U.S. Highway 14A, mile marker 32: A 59‑year‑old man failed to negotiate a curve and entered the ditch. He was transported to Lead‑Deadwood Monument Health for treatment.
4:50 p.m. — U.S. Highway 14A, mile marker 47: A 54‑year‑old man on a 2026 Harley‑Davidson was struck by an unidentified westbound vehicle that crossed the center line. He was transported to Monument Health.
6:32 p.m. — South Dakota Highway 44, mile marker 34: A 2016 Harley‑Davidson with two riders collided with a 2019 Subaru Forester that was turning left. The Subaru driver, a 66‑year‑old woman, was taken to Monument Health with minor injuries.
6:48 p.m. — U.S. Highway 16, mile marker 59: A 69‑year‑old man was injured after a rear tire failure caused him to lose control. He was wearing a helmet and was transported to Monument Health.
7:34 p.m. — Interstate 90, Exit 59: A 45‑year‑old woman lost control of her 2008 Harley‑Davidson while slowing behind a 2007 Toyota Camry. She was not wearing a helmet and was transported to Monument Health in Rapid City.
All crash details are preliminary. The South Dakota Highway Patrol is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
Records of state‑reportable crashes will be available at SafeSD.gov approximately 10 days after investigations are complete.
