Sturgis Rally Traffic Report: 3 Fatal Crashes, 54 DUI Arrests Reported Across South Dakota

Northeast Radio SD News – Sturgis, SD - The South Dakota Highway Patrol has released its daily Sturgis Rally report covering the 24‑hour period from 6 a.m. Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday, confirming three fatal crashes and increases across several enforcement categories compared to last year.

Enforcement & Activity Totals

According to the report, troopers recorded:

·         54 DUI arrests (up from 53 last year)

·         108 misdemeanor drug arrests (up from 102)

·         46 felony drug arrests (same as last year)

·         104 custodial arrests

·         742 citations (up from 696)

·         2,024 warnings (up from 1,909)

No cash or vehicles were seized during the reporting period.

Crash Summary

The Highway Patrol reported:

·         8 non‑injury crashes

·         21 injury crashes

·         3 fatal crashes resulting in 3 deaths

Fatal Crashes

U.S. Highway 16A, mile marker 27 — 3:22 p.m. Monday. A 63‑year‑old man on a 2002 Yamaha motorcycle left the roadway, entered the westbound ditch, and overturned. He became separated from the motorcycle and died from his injuries.

Deerfield Road & Marshall Gulch Road, Pennington County — 3:34 p.m. Monday. A 46‑year‑old man on a 2008 Harley‑Davidson attempted to pass in a no‑passing zone, lost control while returning to his lane, and rolled into the ditch. He was not wearing a helmet and sustained fatal injuries.

Injury Crashes

The report lists multiple motorcycle crashes across the Black Hills region, including:

·         A 44‑year‑old woman injured on U.S. 14A near mile marker 25

·         A group‑ride crash on Wildlife Loop in Custer State Park

·         A two‑motorcycle collision on SD Highway 244 sending three people to Monument Health

·         Serious injuries in crashes on Nemo Road, U.S. Highway 16, Vanocker Canyon Road, and S. Rochford Road

·         A late‑night ATV rollover on Sheridan Lake Road injuring three men

The Highway Patrol notes that all information released so far is preliminary.

Names of those involved have not been released.
