Thune, Rounds Visit Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate as Lake Traverse Adult Detention Center Nears Completion

Northeast Radio SD News – Sisseton, SD - The Sisseton‑Wahpeton Oyate (SWO) welcomed Senate Majority Leader John Thune and U.S. Senator Mike Rounds to the Lake Traverse Reservation this week as the Tribe marked the near‑completion of its new Adult Detention Center, a major public‑safety project more than a decade in the making.
The visit, held September 2, prompted a temporary closure of tribal government operations to accommodate federal security protocols. Tribal officials said the closure allowed SWO law enforcement to coordinate with federal security teams, manage access to facilities, and ensure the safety of employees, visitors, and the Senate delegation.
The Tribal Council acknowledged the inconvenience to members and thanked the community for its patience, noting that hosting the Senate Majority Leader requires significant security measures.
A Milestone in Tribal Justice Infrastructure
The visit was more than ceremonial. For years, Senators Thune and Rounds have played key roles in helping the Tribe secure federal resources through the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services Public Safety and Justice Construction Program, restoring and advancing funding needed to build a modern detention facility.
The new Adult Detention Center is now nearing 100 percent completion, representing a major investment in the Tribe’s ability to administer justice, strengthen public safety, and support law enforcement across the Lake Traverse Reservation.
Senators Praise Tribal Leadership and Law Enforcement
During the visit, Senator Thune congratulated the Oyate for the sustained work required to bring the project to completion, calling the facility an important foundation for public safety for years to come. He also recognized Senator Rounds for his partnership in advancing the project.
Senator Rounds highlighted the efforts of SWO Chief of Police Gary Gaikowski and the Tribe’s law enforcement officers, noting that the new facility will allow officers to operate more efficiently and remain closer to home while protecting the people they serve. He applauded the Tribal Council and all contributors, emphasizing that a project of this scale “requires a team.”
Acknowledgment of Longstanding Support
The Sisseton‑Wahpeton Oyate also expressed appreciation to Governor Larry Rhoden, Senator John Hoeven, and Senator Kevin Cramer for their long‑term support of the Tribe’s public safety and justice initiatives.
