Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - The Watertown Figure Skate Club (WFSC) is firmly etching its name into national figure skating history this week out in Southern California. Competing at the United States Theatre On Ice (TOI) National Championships, WFSC’s Open Ensemble and Juvenile teams delivered breathtaking performances against a massive field of over 1,800 athletes and 103 teams from across the country.

In a season defined by grit, countless hours of rehearsal, and unbreakable trust, the club has achieved a remarkable milestone: this trip marks the very first time WFSC has sent a TOI team to an official competition, debuting directly on the national stage.

Open Ensemble Achieves Historic Top 10 Finish

At the beginning of the season, the Open Ensemble team set a simple but incredibly ambitious goal: finish in the top 10 at Nationals. On the ice in Huntington Beach, that mission was officially accomplished.

The team began their campaign with a strong Choreographic Exercise (CE) routine set to “Clocks,” earning them a spot in the top 10 heading into the finals. On the decisive final night, the team performed their Free Program to the vibrant theme of “Sister Act.” Delivering a flawless and joyous performance when it mattered most, the skaters shattered their previous Ensemble performance record by an astounding 9 points.

When the final standings were announced, WFSC secured 10th place in the nation. The level of elite competition was incredibly fierce, highlighted by the fact that the margin between 9th and 10th place was a mere 0.34 of a point.

“This wasn’t luck. It was months of grit. Countless hours of rehearsal. Trust. Dedication. Heart. And a team that refused to stop believing in one another.”

Juvenile Team Shines Bright and Secures 8th Place

The historic success did not end with the Open Ensemble. WFSC’s Juvenile team brought electric energy to the arena all week. After crushing their initial CE choreographic routine and entering the finals in 7th place, the team faced the ultimate test: their “Descendants” themed Free Program, which accounted for 77.7% of their overall score.

Leaving it all on the ice, the Descendants team delivered the best free program they have ever skated. Showcasing perfect timing, flawless stunts, amazing lifts, and spot-on expressions, they executed a clean routine with zero deductions. The spectacular performance earned them a new personal best by 8.75 points, culminating in an incredible 8th place finish overall at Nationals.

Memories Beyond the Rink

While the on-ice achievements are monumental, the journey is also providing unforgettable off-ice experiences for the Watertown athletes. Festivities kicked off at a massive welcome party, where the skaters traded pins with teams from all over the U.S., danced, and enjoyed ice cream provided by organizers.

During their downtime, the teams bonded over a trip to Disneyland and an excursion to the iconic Huntington Beach pier. For three of the athletes, it was their very first time seeing the Pacific Ocean. The beach trip was made even more memorable by the surprise sight of a juvenile shark caught and brought onto the pier just a short distance from where the team had been swimming.
