A car has crashed into a building, causing significant structural damage, as Watertown Fire Rescue works to stabilize the scene.

Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - A local business at 23 Kemp Ave West sustained structural damage Monday morning after a hatchback sedan crashed through its entrance.

At approximately 9:30 a.m. on March 16, 2026, Watertown Fire Rescue’s Engine 4 responded to reports of a vehicle striking a building. Upon arrival, crews discovered the sedan had driven through a converted entrance—formerly an overhead garage opening—consisting of two glass doors and wood lap siding.

The driver of the vehicle was already being assisted by law enforcement when fire personnel arrived on the scene. No injuries were reported following the collision.

Structural Stabilization

During an interior evaluation of the business, firefighters identified a sagging double 2x6 header above the damaged opening. To ensure the structural integrity of the building, the following steps were taken:

·         Vehicle Removal: Active Towing successfully removed the hatchback from the structure without causing further shifting or movement.

·         Site Preparation: Engine 4 crews cleared the work area by cutting away damaged 2x4 framing and removing tin siding.

·         Emergency Shoring: Firefighters installed a Paratech strut system with an extension to secure and support the compromised header.

Scene Handover

A construction company representing the business was present during the stabilization process and was briefed on the temporary measures implemented. Once the area was secured, Watertown Fire Rescue turned the scene over to the property owner and contractors to begin permanent repairs.
