Northeast Radio SD News - Watertown, SD - On Thursday, February 5, 2026, the Watertown Optimist Club will join thousands of volunteers across the globe to celebrate Optimist Day. This annual observance, held on the first Thursday of February, recognizes the “optimism in action” provided by club members who work year-round to support local youth and strengthen the community.
The day serves as a tribute to the volunteers who dedicate their time to bringing out the best in others. Local members plan to mark the occasion by wearing Optimist apparel, sharing the Optimist Creed, and reflecting on the major projects that have shaped Watertown over recent years.
“Optimist Day is a great reminder of the power of positivity and service,” said Val Engels, Watertown Optimist Club President. “It’s about showing up for our community, supporting youth, and creating experiences that bring people together.”
A Legacy of Local Service
The Watertown Optimist Club has been a driving force behind several high-profile community landmarks and programs. Key initiatives include:
· The Winter Wonderland: Now in its 14th year, this holiday tradition has become a staple for local families.
· The Optimist All Access Playground (2022): Located at McKinley Park, this inclusive space was funded in part by the club to ensure children of all abilities have a place to play.
· The Born Learning Trail (2025): A partnership with the Watertown Area United Way at McKinley Park that encourages early childhood development through interactive play.
· Educational Support: The club hosts an annual Essay Contest and awards three scholarships to local students each year to foster leadership and positive thinking.
Leadership and Global Connection
The local club is currently led by a dedicated board of officers, including Valerie Engels (President), Anjelica Uthe, Josh Finstad, Jill Slobotski, Chad Wika, Carmen Bakken, and Kara Pieschke.
Optimist Day was officially adopted by Optimist International in 2013. Supporters are encouraged to join the movement on February 5 by sharing messages of hope on social media using the hashtags #OptimistDay and #OptimistDay2026.
Get Involved: "New Optimist Wanted” Day
For those inspired by the mission of the club, the Watertown Optimists are hosting a New Optimist Wanted (NOW) Day on Thursday, February 12, at Pizza Ranch.
The event is designed for community members interested in learning more about becoming an Optimist. The club provides a free lunch to guests who attend to explore service opportunities.
Regular meetings are held on the second and fourth Thursday of each month at noon at Pizza Ranch (with a modified schedule of once per month during June, July, and August). Guests are always welcome.
