2 Killed, 3 Minneapolis Police Officers Injured in Downtown Apartment Shooting; Suspected Shooter Dead
Northeast Radio SD News – Minneapolis, MN - Two people have been killed, and a suspected shooter is dead following a chaotic Wednesday afternoon shooting inside a downtown Minneapolis apartment building, according to AP News. Three Minneapolis police officers were also injured in the incident, which prompted a massive law enforcement response in the densely populated Loring Park neighborhood near the Minneapolis Convention Center.
Officers responded to a 911 call regarding shots fired shortly after 4:30 p.m., AP News reports. Within three minutes, police entered the high-rise and discovered the initial victims. Advancing to a higher floor after hearing additional gunfire, officers encountered a “haze” that severely restricted their visibility, according to statements from Minneapolis Police Sgt. Garrett Parten. During the incident, two officers sustained gunshot wounds—including one who was shot in the leg and required surgery—while a third was also injured. All three officers are currently in stable condition at Hennepin County Medical Center, which reported receiving a total of seven patients from the scene.
One victim was pronounced dead at the apartment complex, and another died after being transported to the hospital. According to AP News, authorities have not yet clarified exactly how the suspected shooter died.
Residents described a terrifying sequence of events. Julius Bailey, who was sitting outside the building, reported hearing a woman screaming followed by eight gunshots. He told AP News he saw a resident he recognized—and actively avoided—holding a pistol. Another resident, Chris Miller, stated he heard a rapid succession of gunfire and fled outside. Miller noted he believed he knew the shooter and had actually reported the individual to building management earlier in the week after seeing him with a handgun in the hallway.
The violence drew immediate state and federal attention. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz announced on social media that state officials are actively assisting local law enforcement, offering gratitude and prayers for the first responders. Furthermore, FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed via the social platform X that the agency is on the ground and providing all necessary resources to assist Minneapolis authorities with the ongoing investigation.
