88-Year-Old Woman Injured, 31-Year-Old Man Evaluated

Northeast Radio SD News - Watertown, SD - A two-vehicle crash at a busy Watertown intersection sent one driver to the hospital and left another vehicle a total loss on Thursday morning.


At approximately 8:55 a.m., the Watertown Police Department and Watertown Fire Rescue responded to the intersection of 5th Avenue NE and 4th Street NE. According to a release from Patrol Sergeant Cody Trumm, the collision involved an 88-year-old Watertown woman and a 31-year-old Watertown man.


Authorities stated the woman was driving a red 2018 Lexus southbound on 4th Street NE when she attempted to make a left turn onto 5th Avenue NE. During the turn, the Lexus crossed in front of a northbound 2004 silver Volkswagen driven by the 31-year-old male. The resulting collision caused major damage to the passenger side of the Lexus and the front of the Volkswagen.


The female driver was taken by ambulance to Prairie Lakes Hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. The male driver was evaluated at the scene by Watertown Fire Rescue paramedics and subsequently released.


The crash resulted in a total loss for the Volkswagen, while the Lexus sustained an estimated $10,000 in damage. Both vehicles were towed from the scene, and traffic in the area was disrupted for approximately 25 minutes during the investigation and cleanup.


Police confirmed that the investigation into the crash is ongoing and charges are currently pending.
