Adult Man Dies, Juvenile Hospitalized After Lake Mary Drowning Near Lake Norden

Northeast Radio SD News – Lake Norden, SD - An adult male has died, and a juvenile is receiving medical treatment following a tragic drowning incident at Lake Mary on Sunday evening.


At approximately 7:36 p.m. on Sunday, June 21, 2026, emergency crews were dispatched following a 911 report stating that a juvenile and an adult male were underwater at the lake. The incident occurred in the area of Bluejay Street, approximately 0.7 miles west of 452nd Avenue, just east of Lake Norden.


Members of the Lake Norden Police Department and the Lake Norden Fire Department arrived at the scene within minutes and were able to locate both individuals.


The juvenile was transported to a hospital for medical treatment via a personal vehicle. Meanwhile, emergency medical personnel with the Lake Norden Ambulance immediately initiated life-saving measures on the adult male. Despite these efforts, the man was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Authorities are withholding the identity of the deceased individual pending the notification of family members.


The Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the drowning. Agencies that responded to the scene included the Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office, Lake Norden Police Department, South Dakota Highway Patrol, Lake Norden Fire Department, and Lake Norden Ambulance.


The Sheriff’s Office has stated that additional information will be released as it becomes available.
