Northeast Radio SD News - Watertown, SD - Lake Area Technical College is now accepting applications for the Build Dakota Scholarship program, offering students a pathway to graduate debt-free and enter high-demand career fields in South Dakota. The application period is currently open with a deadline of March 31, 2026.
Established in 2015, the Build Dakota Scholarship provides full-ride awards to qualifying students attending the state’s technical colleges. The scholarship is comprehensive, covering tuition, fees, and books, as well as necessary program-related equipment, such as tools and laptops.
Lake Area Technical College Foundation Executive Director Tracy Buisker noted that the program often serves as a direct bridge to the workforce. Many scholars are paired with industry partners who commit to hiring them immediately after graduation.
“This is a unique opportunity for students to attend college and enter the workforce debt-free,” Buisker said. “The program is open to both in-state and out-of-state students who commit to working in South Dakota for three years following graduation. It can truly be life-changing.”
To qualify for the award, applicants must be U.S. citizens and enrolled full-time in a qualifying program at Lake Area Tech. Additionally, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
While the Build Dakota program is a significant focus, Buisker encouraged students of all income levels to explore the various financial supports available through the college.
“In addition to Build Dakota, the Lake Area Technical College Foundation has several other scholarship opportunities,” Buisker said. “I would encourage all students to visit with us and explore their options.”
Lake Area Technical College, founded in 1965, currently serves nearly 2,700 students across more than 30 programs. Recognized as a leader in technical education, the college was named the nation’s best two-year college in 2017.
