Brookings County Emergency Crews Respond to House Fire and Vehicle Rollover

Northeast Radio SD News – Brookings County, SD - The Brookings County Sheriff’s Department responded to two emergencies on Monday, including a structural fire requiring extensive mutual aid and a vehicle rollover resulting in hospitalization.


Multi-Agency Response to House Fire

On June 22, 2026, at 10:48 a.m., emergency crews were dispatched to a house fire located on 464th Avenue near 199th Street. The initial response included the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, Estelline Fire Department, and Estelline Ambulance.


Upon arrival, responding units observed flames coming out of the home. A large mutual aid request brought additional support to the scene from the Bruce, Arlington, Brookings, Elkton, Aurora, Volga, and Sinai Fire Departments.


All occupants of the home were able to safely exit the structure, and no injuries were reported. Fire crews successfully extinguished the blaze. The total cost of the property damage is still being estimated, and the official cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.


Rollover Crash Following Suspected Medical Event

Later that afternoon, at 12:31 p.m., emergency personnel were called to a single-vehicle accident on 216th Street near 465th Avenue. The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, Volga Fire Department, Brookings Fire Department, and Brookings Ambulance responded to the crash.


According to investigators at the scene, a 2016 RAM 1500 left the roadway following a suspected medical event. First responders evaluated the driver, identified as 66-year-old Michael Zobel of Arlington, before transporting him to Brookings Hospital with unknown injuries. Zobel was later transferred to Sioux Falls for further medical treatment.


The collision destroyed the pickup truck, resulting in an estimated $20,000 in damages. The rollover incident remains under investigation by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
