Codington County 4-H Highlights Youth Success, Achievement Days and State Fair Plans in Watertown

Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - The local 4-H program took center stage during the Codington County Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.  4-H Educator Jody Loeher presented her monthly report and introduced a special guest to highlight the program’s impact on local youth.

Jody brought along James Conkey, a graduating 4-H member, to demonstrate how the organization prepares young adults for the future.

Before giving Conkey the floor, Jody updated the board on the bustling local 4-H activities, noting that the county’s Achievement Days were actively underway.

“I just left the companion animal show, followed by our poultry and rabbit shows this afternoon, and the animals will check in tonight,” Jody told the commissioners.

She emphasized the particularly high turnout for livestock this year, explaining that she had spent several days organizing pen assignments to accommodate the large number of animals. She made sure to extend her gratitude to the community members who make the busy week possible.

“A big thank you to all the volunteers and judges who helped make it a success, along with our 4-H supporters and sponsors,” she said. “4-H youth are beyond ready for their future.”

Upcoming State Fair and New 4-H Year

Jody also reminded the board and the public about the upcoming South Dakota State Fair, which is scheduled for September 2 through September 7. During the fair, she will be serving as the co-chair of the Special Foods and Fashion Review Youth in Action Committee. She noted that all state fair results will be available online at extension.sdstate.edu under the 4-H and state fair sections.

Looking ahead to the fall, she announced that the new 4-H year will officially begin on October 1.

Developing Crucial Life Skills

When it was his turn to speak, graduating member James Conkey shared his personal experiences with the program, pointing to communication skills as his most valuable takeaway.

“Throughout 4-H, I’ve done many different projects, but I would say one of the biggest things that’s had an impact on me and made me beyond ready in my future was the public speaking project,” Conkey explained to the board.

He detailed how the process of selecting, memorizing, and delivering speeches at both the county and state levels profoundly impacted his personal growth.

“That was huge in the development of just self-confidence and being able to go and give speeches in different aspects, like even right here, just talking to you guys,” Conkey added.

The commissioners were impressed by his delivery, with Chairman Troy VanDusen quickly noting, “I can tell you did very well.”

Jody concluded the presentation by highlighting Conkey’s dedication to giving back to the organization. Having participated in the 4-H dog program for many years, Conkey stepped up this year as a volunteer to assist the show’s organizers and help guide younger members.
