Codington County Approves Grant Application to Update Pre-Disaster Mitigation Plan

Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - Codington County will move forward with a new grant opportunity aimed at updating its Pre‑Disaster Mitigation Plan, following unanimous approval Tuesday by the Board of Commissioners.
Emergency Management Director Andrew Delgado briefed commissioners on the proposal, explaining that the county previously attempted to apply for funding through the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program last year. That effort stalled when several partner communities were unable to return required letters of participation before the deadline.
A new option — the Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA) Grant Program — now provides a path forward. Delgado said the program includes dedicated funding for capability and capacity building, which specifically allows counties to use grant dollars for mitigation planning.
The update to the Pre‑Disaster Mitigation Plan outlines long‑term strategies to reduce disaster impacts across Codington County and typically involves collaboration with multiple municipalities.
Delgado recommended applying under the same terms proposed last year, including a local match of up to $5,000.
Commissioner Myron Johnson moved to approve the application, with Commissioner Tyler McElhany seconding. The motion passed unanimously.
Chairman Troy VanDusen thanked Delgado for pursuing grant opportunities that help reduce local costs while strengthening county preparedness.
