Codington County Approves Motion Sensor Lighting Upgrade at Memorial Park Bath Houses

Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - Codington County Commissioners on Tuesday approved a long‑awaited electrical upgrade at Memorial Park, voting to install motion‑activated light sensors in all bath houses after learning the facilities have operated with lights on 24 hours a day throughout the camping season.

The project was budgeted earlier this year and comes with a $2,750 quote from Engelstad Electric, according to the agenda documents. The quote, dated June 25, 2026, proposes installation of eight motion sensors across all bath houses at the park.

Lights Have Operated Non‑Stop for Years

During discussion, commissioners learned that Memorial Park’s bath house lights currently run continuously from April through October, with no switches or sensors installed to regulate usage.

After speaking with Engelstad Electric, staff learned that previous installers intentionally left the lights on full‑time, believing constant illumination was preferable. However, commissioners agreed that modern motion sensors would reduce unnecessary electrical use, especially in areas of the park that see little weekday activity.

Budgeted Project Moves Forward

The county had already budgeted for the upgrade, and Engelstad Electric’s quote matched expectations. The official estimate reads:
