Codington County Veterans See Boost in Compensation and Retro-Payments

Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - During the June 4, 2026, Codington County Commissioners meeting, Veterans Service Officer Jay Roberts reported substantial financial wins for local veterans and their families.
Roberts highlighted that $137,078 in retro-payments were secured in May 2026 alone, bringing the year-to-date total to $464,999. Additionally, monthly compensation for veterans or their dependents increased by $22,362 in May, pushing the year-to-date monthly compensation increase to $82,066. The office is currently managing 133 open claims in Codington County and 16 in Hamlin County.

In operations news, Roberts discussed a potential early office relocation if their current landlord rents the space before the September 1, 2026, lease deadline.
Ongoing efforts include volunteer driver recruitment for Disabled American Veterans (DAV) transportation vans and upcoming community outreach events at local care centers, such as Edgewood Assisted Living and Estelline Care Center, to inform veterans and their families about pension benefits.
