Crews Battle Wind-Driven Wildland Fire South of Watertown

Northeast Radio SD News – Watertown, SD - Local fire crews successfully contained a fast-moving grass fire south of Watertown on Sunday afternoon, preventing significant damage to nearby structures.
At approximately 12:20 PM on Sunday, April 12, 2026, Watertown Fire Rescue (WFR) was dispatched to the intersection of 457th Avenue and Meadow Lake Road following reports of a roadside fire. While units were en route, they were updated that the blaze had moved into the trees and was threatening a residence located at 17453 457th Avenue.
Response and Containment
Upon arrival and assessment of the wind-driven fire, WFR requested mutual aid from the Castlewood Fire Department.
· Tactics: Responders focused on stopping the fire’s spread toward farm buildings and tree groves.
· The Halt: The fire was officially stopped once it reached a gravel road to the east.
· Final Scope: The fire was successfully contained to 4.2 acres.
Resources Deployed
A total of 18 personnel from Watertown and Castlewood worked for approximately two hours to ensure all hotspots were extinguished. The joint response included:
· 4 Brush Trucks
· 2 Water Tenders
· 2 Engines
· 1 Command Vehicle
