Northeast Radio SD News – South Dakota - The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is currently investigating the suspected drug overdose death of an inmate at the Mike Durfee State Prison in Springfield.

The deceased inmate was identified as Timothy Tyree, age 46, who was found unresponsive in his bed on Monday morning, November 17th. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he passed away. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the official cause of death. At the time of his death, Tyree was serving a sentence for possession of a controlled substance from Minnehaha County.

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley emphasized the severity of the situation and the state's response.

“These suspected drug overdose deaths are becoming too common within our prison system,” said Jackley. “The DCI and Department of Corrections Office of the Inspector General will do a thorough investigation of this death. If criminal charges are warranted, we will announce them at the proper time.”

This marks the seventh investigation into the death of a state prison inmate conducted by the DCI since February of this year. Jackley noted that two previous cases have already resulted in criminal felony charges, which are set for jury trial in January.

The investigation into Tyree's death is ongoing, with authorities working to determine the circumstances surrounding the suspected overdose.
