Elkton Man Dies After Skid Loader Accident in Brookings County

Northeast Radio SD News – Elkton, SD - A 40‑year‑old Elkton man died Tuesday afternoon after being ejected from a skid loader and becoming trapped underneath the machine, according to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.


The accident occurred at 2:47 p.m. at a residence along South Dakota Highway 13 near 483rd Avenue, just north of Elkton. Responders from the Sheriff’s Office, Elkton Fire Department, Elkton Ambulance, Brookings Ambulance, and North Memorial Air Service were dispatched to the scene.


Deputies say Shane Brown, 40, of Elkton, had been operating a Case 1845B skid loader while working with others on a future construction project at a family property. During operation, Brown was ejected from the machine and became trapped underneath it, according to the report.


Individuals on scene were able to free Brown before emergency crews arrived. Despite life‑saving efforts, he did not survive.


The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office says the case remains under investigation in coordination with the Brookings County Coroner.
