Northeast Radio SD News – Brookings County, SD - The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to two separate firework‑related fires over the holiday weekend, with incidents reported near White and in Bruce on July 4 and July 5.

The first fire occurred at 10:02 PM Saturday near the intersection of 478th Avenue and South Dakota Highway 30 outside White. Deputies and the White Fire Department arrived to find a small grass fire spreading along a fence line. Individuals at the scene had already extinguished most of the flames, and firefighters ensured the fire was fully out. The Sheriff’s Office says a malfunctioning firework caused the fire. A damage estimate is pending, and no charges are expected.

A second fire was reported at 10:23 PM Sunday in the 400 block of Jefferson Avenue in Bruce. Deputies and the Bruce Fire Department responded after a fence caught fire. The homeowner put out the flames before they reached the structure, and firefighters removed the damaged fence to prevent further risk. The cause was determined to be a firework accident. Damage is estimated at $500, and no charges are pending.

Both incidents were investigated by the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
