Northeast Radio SD News – Sioux Falls, SD - South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley announced Wednesday that five individuals have been indicted in connection with a scheme to transport contraband into the South Dakota State Penitentiary. The group includes a former correctional officer, two current inmates, and two civilians.
“Transporting illegal items into the prison makes the facility less safe for staff and inmates,” said Attorney General Jackley. “We will not tolerate such activity and thank you to the Department of Corrections for its cooperation with the investigation.”
The defendants indicted by a Minnehaha County Grand Jury on Sept. 17 are:
· Carson DeYoung, 22, Sioux Falls — former South Dakota Department of Corrections officer
· Max Bolden, 42, and Simba Oma Maat, 25 — current inmates at the South Dakota State Penitentiary
· Nancy Sage, 52, Sioux Falls
· Chandler Boone, 31, Denver, CO
All five face felony charges, including:
· Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance (Methamphetamine) — up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine; doubled for inmates Bolden and Maat
· Conspiracy to Commit Distribution of Synthetic Cannabinoids (K2) — up to 5 years in prison and a $10,000 fine; doubled for inmates
· Conspiracy to Deliver Authorized Article (Cell Phone) to an Inmate — up to 5 years in prison and a $10,000 fine; doubled for inmates
· Misdemeanor count of Conspiracy to Deliver Unauthorized Article (Vape Pen) — up to 1 year in jail and a $2,000 fine; doubled for inmates
Additional charges include:
· DeYoung: Possession of an Unauthorized Article (anabolic steroid) with intent to deliver, and Possession of a Controlled Substance with intent to distribute
· Sage: Possession of Methamphetamine and Synthetic Cannabinoids
· Boone: Allegedly procured and mailed contraband to Sage for delivery
Attorney General Jackley stated that while DeYoung had agreed to transport the items, he had not yet done so. The investigation remains active regarding other potential deliveries.
Bolden is serving a life sentence for murder. Maat is incarcerated for First and Second Degree Burglary, with a scheduled release in 2028.
The case was investigated by South Dakota’s Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), with assistance from the Department of Corrections Office of the Inspector General and the Sioux Falls Area Drug Task Force, which includes personnel from the Sioux Falls Police Department and the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office. The Attorney General’s Office will prosecute.
All defendants are presumed innocent under the U.S. Constitution.
