Flat Trailer Tire Sparks Multiple Grass Fires Along SD Highway 22 Near Castlewood

Northeast Radio SD News – Castlewood, SD - Emergency crews responded Saturday afternoon after nearly a dozen 911 callers reported multiple small grass fires burning along the south ditch of SD Highway 22, stretching from east of Castlewood near 460th Avenue to Interstate 29.
The calls came in at approximately 2:15 p.m., prompting response from the Castlewood Fire Department and the Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office. Before firefighters arrived, several passing motorists and nearby residents attempted to put out the flames.
Fire crews quickly brought the situation under control, extinguishing about 10 separate fire locations along the highway. No structures were threatened, no property damage occurred, and no injuries were reported.
According to investigators, the fires were caused by a trailer tire that went flat while traveling on SD Highway 22. The damaged tire produced sparks that ignited the dry roadside grass, leading to the series of small fires.
