Garage Fire West of Elkton Destroys Structure and Two Vehicles

Northeast Radio SD News - Elkton, SD - A structure fire on Monday afternoon resulted in the total loss of a garage and two vehicles located two miles west of Elkton on SD Highway 13, according to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office. No injuries were reported in the incident.

The Elkton Fire Department and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the scene at 48420 SD Highway 13 at approximately 1:37 p.m. on Monday, December 8, 2025.

Upon the arrival of first responders, smoke was visible coming from the residence’s attached garage. The homeowner reported that she had just returned from Brookings and noticed an unusual odor emanating from the 2017 Kia Sportage she had been driving. After parking the vehicle inside the garage to investigate, she opened the hood and discovered the engine compartment was engulfed in smoke and flames.

The homeowner attempted to extinguish the fire using a fire extinguisher, but the flames had progressed too far to be controlled. A 2007 Volkswagen Beetle was also inside the garage at the time.

The fire destroyed the garage, the two vehicles, and all other contents. The combined damage estimate provided at the scene is approximately $60,000.

In addition to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and the Elkton Fire Department, the Aurora Fire Department also assisted in the response.
