Northeast Radio SD News – Lake Albert, SD - The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) Commission introduced several key proposals during its January meeting held at the Pierre Ramkota on January 8-9, including a change for local property owners at Lake Albert.

Local Impact: Lake Albert Waterfowl Refuge

The Commission has proposed removing the refuge status from the Lake Albert Waterfowl Refuge. This move comes at the formal request of eight private landowners whose property currently comprises the refuge area.

Historically, the refuge status has restricted hunting activities on these private lands. Landowners provided signed consents for the removal, noting that they wish to regain control over hunting access on their property. According to the proposal, many of these landowners have received requests from hunters but were previously unable to grant permission for waterfowl harvest due to existing refuge designations.

Additional Statewide Proposals

Beyond the changes at Lake Albert, the Commission introduced measures affecting boating and high-demand hunting raffles:

·        Iron Creek Lake: A “No Wake Zone” was proposed for the 24-acre impoundment in Lawrence County. The measure is intended to mitigate shoreline erosion caused by boat wakes.

·        Hunt for Habitat Raffle: The Commission outlined a modified license package for the 2026 raffle. The proposal includes up to 10 big-game licenses, featuring high-value opportunities such as Custer State Park Trophy Bison and statewide elk and deer packages.

Public Comment Period Open

The GFP is currently seeking public input on these proposals. To be included in the official record for Commission consideration, comments must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. CT on March 1. All submissions must include the commenter’s full name and city of residence.

The Commission is scheduled to meet again in Pierre on March 5-6 to discuss these items further. Full details of the proposals and archived meeting audio are available on the GFP website.
