Grass Fire Quickly Extinguished Along I-29 Near Brookings After Mower Strikes Electronic Device

Northeast Radio SD News – Brookings County, SD - A late‑night grass fire along Interstate 29 prompted a response from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and Brookings Fire Department Wednesday, after flames were reported near mile marker 128.
According to Investigations Sergeant Thomas Chester, crews were dispatched at 11:37 p.m. on July 15. Responders arrived to find a small grass fire spreading along the roadway shoulder. Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze quickly, preventing further spread.
The cause was traced to an electronic device that had been struck by a mower, igniting the surrounding grass. The sheriff’s office noted that no damage was reported to the grass beyond the burned area.
“Responding units observed a small grass fire that spread along the roadway,” the release states.
The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents and maintenance crews to use caution when mowing near roadways, especially during dry conditions
